MY GUZMIN

I was super annoyed at my bestie because she made my account on a dating app and is using it and apparently for no reason at all is chatting with a bunch of guys. I confronted her and her reply was the cutest thing I have ever heard, “I am your Guzmin” she said.
Those of you who have watched the Amazon prime series Modern Love would know who is Guzmin. Those who haven’t, first of all, watch it and also Guzmin is the guy from the episode ‘When the Doorman is your Main Man'. Guzmin is the doorman who shares a special bond with a girl and instantly knows which guy would be good for her and who would not. By saying say it can be implied that she gets to decide who is allowed to date me! She also very cleverly digressed me from the topic by saying “you have so many profile matches, all the guys want to date you”. After listening to this I forgot to yell at her. My bad!

We first met seven years ago when we were practically kids. She had the worst night suit in the entire hostel (still does). Next year onwards we became roommates and only after that I got to know the real KOPAL MITTAL, the craziest person with the most annoying sense of humor. I don’t know what are the parameters of deciding who is going to be your best friend, its actually quite weird that of all the people in the world we somehow manage to find a person who is exactly like us but also very different in many ways. Temperament wise, me and Kopal are quite the contrast but when it comes to movies, food or exploring new places we both are quite in sync (judge all you want, we both hated the Elephanta caves). I guess it’s not either ‘like dissolves like’ or ‘opposites attract’, we need a pinch of similarities and a dash of dissimilarities to make a couple of Jais and Veerus.
She has some privileges in life that others might never get; she gets to hear my cracked up voice on the phone when I cry, she also has to hear my snorty laughter when I make fun of her, she gets to know about all my doubts and insecurities, knows about all the time I made a fool of myself and most ultimate privilege that nobody would ever get, she gets to decide the entire playlist for my wedding!
While growing up we have been taught to be competitive and do better than our friends but some of us are rebellious enough to ignore that and instead enjoy being losers together. After we get past all the jealousy, the competition, the prejudice we are left with a couple of weirdos who stay with us for the lifetime. When you find this weirdo or weirdos, as a few people are lucky enough to find more than one (So am I 😊), never ever let them go.
You need your bestie to help you to impress your crush, also to get over that jerk who broke your heart, to brainstorm business ideas and to make your miserable life a little better!

ABOUT THE SERIES:

Modern love is a weekly column about tiny love stories featuring in the New York Times. It is also a book, a podcast and now a television series with 8 episodes. My favorite episode is ‘Take Me As I Am, Whoever I am’ which features Anne Hathaway. Go watch it now on Amazon Prime. Read the newspaper columns here.

  1. Just came across this today while I was skimming through your blog to see if your profile picture on blogger is blurry like mine. I have not been able to figure out that part of blogger yet. But I am so glad , in that process I came across this post. What a lovely read!
