AIM FOR THE SKY OR IS IT TOO HIGH?
There are two kinds of people in this world; Those who
make you happy, always appreciate you, make you feel special and Those who tell
you the truth. I recently saw an amazing podcast by one of my favorite comedians
which motivated me to write this blog. He said something very real, something
nobody would ever say not even our worst enemies. Basically, it was a
question-answer podcast and somebody had asked him and I quote “I like someone
but I am scared to ask him out because he is out of my league, help”. This is
what I would say to this person, go for it looks don’t matter, there are no
more shallow people left on this planet who judge you by your looks and inner
beauty is all that matters; simultaneously thinking ‘Somebody gonna gets
rejected!’ All the “inspirational” souls out there would tell you the same with
obvious exaggeration that you end up believing them. The outcome is usually similar
in all such cases which are well explained in lovely Bollywood songs such as
Channa Mareya and others. Here is what he said, “League is a very real thing
and it is a “psychologically proven” fact that people are attracted to people who
are as “good looking” as them.” I can imagine that poor girl’s reaction, what
if she asked him out already, that would not have ended well, we all know it.
Because it is also a “psychologically proven” fact that we seldom take somebody’s
advice unless it is exactly what we want.
This also reminded me of a fun story that happened to
me and my friend in college. We were applying for colleges for higher education
outside India and we wanted some advice on the schools to pursue. We approached
one of our very senior professors, he had some experience, and is the most
realist a person can be he said, “I like Aishwarya Rai but I cannot get her to
marry me, so aim for the colleges where your probability of getting through is
higher.” Reality strikes harder than lightning, doesn’t it?
Dream big, fight hard, the sky is the limit or as my
father likes to say “Sher maar jaata hai, pr ghass nahi khata”. We cannot put
those motivational speakers to waste, what will they say to us, ‘average is the
new best’, ‘your goals should be within limits’, ‘don’t go for it because you
might lose’. What will Bruno Mars say “I
don’t wanna be a billionaire so f**king bad”. OH MY GOD, what would Taylor
Swift even write about it! When Rudyard
Kipling said,
If you can make one heap of all your winnings,
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginning,
And never breathe a word about your loss;
I am sure he was trying to motivate us to
ignore our loss and start again from the beginning until we reach another loss
because we ain’t quitters! Can you imagine how many public speakers, authors,
social media influencers would be jobless if one day we all just decide to be
realists? They say that America is running the economy but actually, it is
people like you and me naïve and gullible enough to believe that we can reach
the sky without a rocket, who are actually responsible for running the economy.
Coming
back to the league paradox, the world like to see others in pain, I say go for
it give them something to laugh about! Dream big! Propose an insanely hot girl
or guy! Make a fool out of yourself because, in the end, you are going to be the
person responsible for Arijit Singh’s success. You will make movies like Ae Dil
Hai Mushkil a blockbuster. You will make Selena Gomez great again. Your sob
story will help the poets, the artists, the songwriters to create more
content.
In closing, I just have one question; How to
determine this league? Is it mentioned in our birth certificates? If you have any idea please let me know.....
Woww!
